Jake Owen Explains The Story Behind Almost Getting Arrested On Cinco De Mayo
Jake Owen has had quite a busy couple of weeks. Not only did he get married on the beach a week ago, but a couple days before that, he nearly got himself arrested, after goofing around outside a Steak ‘n Shake in his home town of Vero Beach, Florida.
Jake called Lisa and Ray, giving them the full scoop on what the incident was all about.
“It was a huge misunderstanding,” Jake explains. “I’m a lover, dude. I’m not trying to create any problems. But I do like to have a damn good time. That’s how I roll.”
“So I was with my mom, my dad, my sister, my brother in law, all my nieces and nephews. We were just at a show. We all rode my tour bus to the Steak ‘n Shake. They walked off the tour bus into the Steak ‘n Shake. I looked at my driver, and said, ‘Hey, watch this.’ I have this old man mask. It’s pretty funny – I thought it was funny. But unbeknownst to me, I didn’t know there’s a law that you’re not allowed to go into a public establishment with a mask on.”
“They probably thought you were going to rob the joint!” says Ray.
“OK, I could understand that if I got out of a getaway van,” Jake says. “But I got out of a tour bus!”
“The funny thing was, my parents thought it was a joke. Because I had the mask on, they thought the cop was joking, and I was joking. And it wasn’t a joke — the guy was serious. But to his credit, [the officer] had no idea that I was not only who I was, but I was not going in there to do that.”
It sounds like they arrested you for doing nothing,” says Ray.
“I did nothing actually,” says Jake.” I had a good time, that’s all that matters.”
“People made a big deal out of it. But it’s a Steak ‘n Shake. At midnight.”
