Today (June 19) is a big day for Kenny Chesney. His album Welcome to the Fishbowl is hitting stores for the first time, and he couldn’t be happier.
As well as, he says, a bit nervous.
“It’s an exciting time,” he told the Dr. Don Morning Show team at CBS Detroit station WYCD during an interview today. Yet, at the same time, he also admitted that “no matter how many times you do this, it’s still an uncertain time,” because “you work so hard on your music, and your record.”
Kenny says that the name of the album came from one of his football buddies when they were down in Grayton Beach, Florida at one of their favorite bars. “During the 4th of July, we always go down there to a place called the Red Bar. I love it man, right on the ocean.”
“We went there at 4 o’clock in the afternoon,” he continues, “and so people were coming up asking for autographs, which is great.”
“One of those guys said, ‘I didn’t know your life was this crazy.’ I said, ‘It’s not that crazy all the time guys. It’s the way it is. People love music, they love what we do.’ And he said, ‘Well, welcome to the fishbowl I guess.’ And I said, ‘Well…thank you very much, and Merry Christmas to me!'”
“So I wrote that title down, and tried to write a song about how our world and our culture is changing every day. Our window of the world is getting smaller and smaller because of technology and all the stuff we got on our phones. And you don’t have to be in the public eye like me to feel like you’re losing your privacy.”
“This song is more about privacy than it is celebrity. I make the joke all the time that, one thing that social media does to us today is erase anybody’s ability to lie. And if you do, you’re gonna get caught, and that’s the idea of ‘Welcome to the Fishbowl.'”

Kenny is currently previewing songs from Welcome to the Fishbowl on his website (where you can also buy the album). He’s also traveling the U.S. this summer on his Brothers of the Sun tour with Tim McGraw.
