After breaking records with her new single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” Taylor Swift finds herself sitting at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the second week in a row.
And considering that level of impact and success, it was entirely appropriate that she should debut the official music video for “Getting Back Together” in a grand way. Which she did, unveiling it to the world during a live premiere last night (Aug. 30), and sitting down to talk about it with CMT’s Katie Cook and MTV’s Sway in front of millions of fans.
As many artists now do, Taylor had previously released a lyric video, which gave anxious fans a chance to learn the words to “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” As she told CMT’s Katie Cook, “lyrics are really important to me, I love when people know the words to the songs.” And since the official video had not yet been filmed, this was a great way for the fans to get acquainted with the song.
From the last world premiere for “Mean,” shot in Kennebunkport, Maine to the old MGM Grand Lot in Los Angeles, Taylor talks about what it was like shooting this video where classics like The Wizard of Oz and Singing In The Rain had been filmed. “It felt really big time, I’m not gonna lie to you,” Taylor admitted.
The video for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” expertly directed by Declan Whitebloom, was shot with one camera in a single take with no editing. It included “four second costume changes” that wwere “crazy, rushed and insane,” Swift explained to Cook.
And speaking of costumes, Taylor also said that her band members were really excited about the video because “they thought they would get to wear something really cool.” When you watch the video, though, as Taylor explained it, “you’ll understand why they were absolutely mortified when they first saw the costumes. I felt a little bad…but not that bad.”
In the video, the members of her band wear an array of hilarious woodland animal get-ups–a monkey, a large-headed donkey, a bear, a cat, and what appeared to be a black sheep. No matter what the costumes and make-up wound up being, though, it’s obvious that the actors were enjoying the moment and making the most of it.

Taylor Swift’s fourth album, Red, is due to hit stores October 22.
