Lady A’s Hillary Scott Talks Lip-Syncing: ‘I Don’t Judge Anybody’
When news emerged that Beyoncé may have lip-synced her rendition of the National Anthem during President Obama’s inauguration Monday, many music fans were dismayed.
But not everyone finds it indefensible.
“When you’re talking about a situation like that, you have to do what’s most comfortable for you.”
That “situation” of course is a “high pressure” moment in front of a U.S. president, amid questionable weather conditions, with the whole world listening via live radio and TV. As Hillary says, it’s a moment “that is going to live way past you,” so it’s much different than playing, say, to fans in a local club.
“There are so many variables that could go wrong in that environment,” says Hillary. “So to have that safety…not that everyone would choose to do that.”
As for Lady Antebellum’s experience with the National Anthem, “We’ve never been in that situation,” Hillary says, but she admits she and her bandmates “easily” could have been.
“I don’t judge anybody,” Hillary asserts. And besides, “everybody knows that [Beyoncé] can sing every note on the scale anyway.”
Lady Antebellum’s new single is “Downtown.”
