Illinois Native Stages His Own Opening Ceremony After Missing Rio’s

A Team USA triathlete couldn’t travel to Rio in time for the opening ceremony but didn’t want to miss it, so he staged his own.

The ceremony you didn’t see was held at the training camp in Flagstaff, Arizona by Geneva, IL native Ben Kanute.

“I don’t get to Rio until Aug. 12 and I was a bit bummed I wouldn’t get to walk at the opening ceremony,” Kanute told TODAY. “I’m at training camp in Arizona and a bunch of us were talking about it and decided to just make our own. I figured I had all the stuff and the uniform, so we filmed a video of me walking, and training partners were the cheering audience.”

Kanute even had fans cheering him on as he walked with his cell phone in his hands, just like the majority of atheletes at the ceremony.

Hilarious!

Good luck, Ben!
